NEW DELHI:  President Ram Nath Kovind today announced the country's highest civilian award-- the Bharat Ratna-- to be given to former president Pranab Mukherjee, social activist Nanaji Deshmukh (posthumously) and musician Dr Bhupen Hazarika (posthumously). Prime Minister Narendra Modi issued congratulatory notes for the three personalities.


All you need to know about Bharat Ratna awardee Nanaji Deshmukh:
  1. 1.Nanaji Deshmukh was born in 1916 in a Marathi family in Parbhani, Maharashtra. As a child, he was inspired by freedom fighter Bal Gangadhar Tilak.
  2. 2.Nanaji Deskhmukh had been a member of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), which is the BJP's ideological mentor. He had worked as the RSS Pracharak in Uttar Pradesh.
  3. 3.As a social activist, he laid emphasis on education. He established first Saraswati Shishu Mandir at Gorakhpur in 1950.
  4. 4.Nanaji Deskmukh was also the general secretary of the RSS' political branch, the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, which was dissolved in 1977.
  5. 5.Nanaji Deshmukh is credited with bolstering the Jana Sangh in Uttar Pradesh.
  6. 6.Nanaji Deshmukh also took part in Jai Prakash Narayan movement during the Emergency.
  7. 7Nanaji Deshmukh had won in the 1977 Lok Sabha election from Balrampur.
  8. 8.He quit politics in 1980 and resigned as a member of parliament.
  9. 9.He was nominated to Rajya Sabha by the government in the year 1999 in recognition of his services to the nation.
  10. 10.He was awarded Padma Vibhushan in 1999. He died in 2010.

First science observation The GROWTH-India telescope was commissioned six months ago soon after which it saw first light, on the night of June 12. “The telescope has been taking readings since then, and this is the first ‘follow-up’ work. We are happy to see this first science observation,” said G C Anupama, who Professor-in-Charge of the Indian Astronomical Observatory and is based at Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIAP), Bengaluru. The celestial object was first noticed by a different group which saw the nova explosion. “We then pointed our telescope in that direction and measured the brightness. We found that it was fading at the rate expected for such events.
